Glossary

For all those non-aviation speaking people, a quick glossary:

VFR

Visual Flight Rules

When visibility, cloud, etc permits, operating in accordance with a specific set of rules. This is the 'basic' set of rules that everybody learns initially.

IFR

Instrument Flight Rules

When visibility deteriorates, through cloud, rain or sometimes through smoke, aircraft need to operate according to these rules, to ensure your plane is navigated adequately, separated from other planes that can't be seen, etc, etc. Requires an addition to the basic licence (called a 'rating')

ILS

Instrument landing system

A 'precision navigation aid' that will guide you in to land, through cloud, to within about 300ft of a runway.

RNAV

Kinda short for 'Area Navigation', but basically referrers to using a GPS, either to navigate between places, or for an RNAV approach, to land at a particular place.
